SUSTAINABLE FASHION
Hii..
According to the Oxford dictionary, sustainable means 'able to be maintained at a certain level or rate'and fashion means 'a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behavior'. Sustainable fashion in my words is an approach towards changing the current fashion system and trends in such a way that it minimizes the adverse impact on environment aiming for better ecological balance and at the same time, maintaining all profits and advancements in the fashion industry. Why should our fashion choices affect our future generations and mankind in a way that it reduces their chances of a safe and healthy survival ?
WHY ?
Although, there is only a slight possibility that a dress, accessory or any fashion-produce is 100% sustainable with both fashion and nature because whatever we use has a certain level of impact on environment that's definitely irreversible ,for instance, the chemical dyes used, the detergents for cleaning, etc. And ultimately, when discarded, the clothes land in huge ugly landfills that that ages to decompose.
As educated people, we have a responsibility towards mother nature to make informed decisions and choices so that whatever we do creates lesser damage than what we have been doing so far.
WHAT TO DO ?
As a producer/manufacturer, you should note that all processes and materials involved are eco-friendly and sustainable.
As a buyer, you can change your buying habits and give second thoughts to everytime you feel there is a need to replace a certain piece of your wardrobe.
1. Exchange
There are several websites that offer facilities such as exchanging clothing with other people. Your discarded clothes that you cannot throw away simply because they are as good as new will find new friends and your personal wardrobe will get a makeover at no extra cost.
2. Donate
Simply throwing away your clothes will do no good. If they are in a good condition, you can always donate such pieces to the needy. However, refrain from doing so if the clothes are soiled or damaged beyond repair.
3. Re-use and Recycle
You'd be amused at how big fashionistas and designers reuse defective products to produce items that amazingly beautiful and catches the eye. You can use old tshirts and create other useful products like bags and doormats.
4. Buy sustainable products from certified manufacturers
Manufacturers who use sustainable and ecofriendly materials and technologies will always advertise about the same. Also, if they don't, you can always ASK and any responsible manufacturer will reply their loyal customers. Also, their are several websites that provide the list of such businesses that are certified by competent authorities.
5. Go organic
Lastly, not only should the newly bought piece be ecofriendly but whatever is used for its maintenance must also be pure and organic as far as possible. Lets say you are tie-dying your cocktail gown in a different shade, then what could be better if the dye used is made from natural products.
Take baby-steps towards a sustainably balanced future and our beautiful Mother Nature will have one less problem to take care of.
All the best.
